House, now school. c1855. For Mark Firth. Ashlar with hipped slate roofs and 4 coped stone ridge stacks. Italianate style. EXTERIOR: rusticated plinth, quoins, first floor band, sill and eaves bands, eaves cornice, balustrade with urns. 2 storeys plus attics; 5 window range. Windows are plain sashes with moulded surrounds, those to ground floor with small cornices. Entrance front, 3 windows, has a central sash flanked to right by a similar sash and to left by a triple sash. Central balustraded carriage porch with paired heavily rusticated Ionic columns. C20 glazed double door and overlight. To left, a triple sash, to right a single one. To right again, set back 2 storey service wing, 2 windows, with hipped roof and large ridge stack. To left, the projecting return of the garden front, with 2 sashes on each floor. Asymmetrical garden front has a recessed centre with 2 single sashes and to right, above the door, a double sash with cornice and pseudo balcony. Below, 2 sashes and to right, a round-headed doorcase with panelled pilasters and glazed 2-leaf door with fanlight and sidelights. To right, a projecting 2 storey canted bay window with 3 sashes on each floor. To left, a square belvedere tower, 3 stages, with modillion eaves cornice and balustrade with urns. First floor has a sash on each side. Viewing stage has rusticated pilasters and on each side a double round-headed opening with single shafts and keystones. Ground floor has a single sash and on the left return, a round-headed niche with a figure. Plainer left return has a canted bay window with 3 sashes on each floor, flanked on each floor by a single sash to right and 3 sashes to left. Set back service wing, to left, has a full-width lean-to conservatory. INTERIOR has a cantilevered stone open well stair with cast-iron balusters and ramped scrolled handrail. Main rooms have enriched cornices. Garden front room has plaster wall panels and painted ceiling. Mark Firth was one of the most important steel manufacturers and philanthropists in Sheffield in the C19.
