GV II
Retaining wall between canal and Redhill Street (formerly known as Union Street) which served as tow-path to this section of canal. 1804. Red brick up to street level, with blocked openings to former tunnels to Murrays Mills; parapet of massive millstone grit slabs with rounded tops, and at east end (next to Union Street Bridge (q.v.) a massive square block with remains of iron fittings for former tow-rope roller. West end terminates just east of footbridge in front of Royal Mill. Forms group with Union Street Bridge and the cotton mills on the opposite side of Redhill Street (q.v.).
