House, now university hall of residence, and adjoining terrace wall and conservatory. Dated 1868, with mid and late C20 additions. For JH Andrew, steel manufacturer. Coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs with coped ridge, gable and side wall stacks. EXTERIOR: plinth, first-floor band and sillband, bracketed eaves cornice, coped gables. 2 storeys; 3 window range. 3 bay entrance front has recessed centre flanked by pedimented wings. In the centre, a plain sash flanked by smaller single sashes. Below, square portico with paired Corinthian columns and balustrade with pedestals. Half-glazed double door with sidelights, flanked by single small windows. Round-arched inner door with fanlight. Wings have single round-arched plain sashes with moulded surrounds and dummy balconies. Below, single plain sashes with cornices on brackets, the right one with a panelled apron. Main garden front has a central square tower, 3 stages, with bracketed cornice and plain parapet. Central round-arched glazing bar window with moulded surround and shaped keystone, and strapwork dummy balcony. Above, to the front, a round-arched triple window with bracketed sill and linked hoodmould. On either side, a pair of simpler round-arched windows. Below, round-arched ashlar doorcase with impost band, enriched moulded head, and shaped keystone. C20 4-panel door with carved stone tympanum. Above the door, string course and bracket to dentilled cornice with strapwork crest. To left, a projecting pedimented wing with a 2-storey canted bay window with 3 plain sashes on each floor. Upper window has carved tympanum under a segment-headed gable. To right, set back range with a single plain sash and below, a large canted stone bay window with 3 plain sashes and pierced balustrade. Left return has an off-centre pedimented projection with a round-arched plain sash with tympanum, and below, a canted stone bay window with 3 plain sashes and pierced balustrade. On either side, a single plain sash on each floor. Beyond, to right, 2 plain sashes and below, a French window with overlight, and another plain sash. To left, a single plain sash on each floor, the upper one segment-headed under a plain panel. INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: outside, adjoining terrace retaining wall, coursed squared stone and ashlar, with coped strapwork balustrade and pedestals, some of them topped with urns. Opposite the main garden front, a flight of steps with balustrade walls and pedestals topped with gadrooned urns. Left return has a smaller and simpler flight of steps. On the terrace, to left, a half-sunken hipped conservatory, with cast-iron ridge crest.
