ST9971 NORTH STREET 755-1/4/114 (East side) Nos.10 AND 12

II

Two cottages. Early/mid C18. Incised render over limestone rubble with continuous pantile roof, stone stacks with rebuilt shafts to gable ends. Single-unit plans with rear extensions. 2 storeys with attics; each cottage is one window range. No.10 to the right is wider, with a blank wall to the far right suggesting a former open fire. Late C19 door and horned 2/2-pane sash windows. No.12 has C20 windows and door. INTERIOR: No.10 has a rear door opposite the front door in a through-passage; the former open fire to the right is now in a continuous wall with a C20 fireplace inserted. To the right of the fireplace C19 cupboard stairs rise to the first floor where a cross-beam to the roof structure has been cut away to make headroom. A C18 chamfered axial beam to the ground floor spans room and passage; a crudely-cut axial beam to the first floor is probably early C18 supported by a later C18 or C19 chamfered crossbeam attached by metal brackets; the floor is divided into 2 rooms and the chamfering runs out to the ends in each room.
