Offices and shops. 1896. By Alfred Waterhouse. For the Prudential Assurance Co. Red brick with granite plinth and terracotta dressings, with steep pitched plain tile roof and single ridge and 2 gable stacks, all panelled and coped. Renaissance Revival style. EXTERIOR: plinth, first floor and third floor cornices, the latter dentilled. Fourth floor has half-octagonal buttresses to each bay, topped with pinnacles. 4 storeys plus attics; 7 window range. Polygonal facade on corner site. Windows are mainly cross mullioned casements. At the apex of the corner, four 2-light windows, those to the second floor in segment-headed recesses. To left, two 3-light windows, and to right, single 3-light windows. Fourth floor has similar fenestration, with a panel above the central pair of windows inscribed "Prudential Assurance", and machicolated parapets over the flanking pairs of windows. Above the centre, a large segmental pedimented gable flanked by spired buttresses and topped with an urn, with 2 plain sashes with transoms and fanlights. On either side, 2 box dormers with single and double glazing bar lights. To left, a smaller gable with concave ramped coping and finial, also with 2 plain sashes with transoms and fanlights. Ground floor has in the centre three 2-light windows with panelled and enriched pilasters between them. To left, a large basket-arched doorway, then a 3-light window. To right, a moulded elliptical arched doorway with fanlight, then a basket arched shopfront with transom and glazing-bar overlight. INTERIOR not inspected. This building is one of many in this style designed by Waterhouse for the Prudential Assurance Co.
