Country house and adjoining service wing, now a Royal Navy Training Ship. Dated 1795 and 1826, with mid and late C20 alterations. Ashlar with hipped slate roof, with 2 coped ridge stacks and 2 side wall stacks. EXTERIOR: plinth, rusticated quoins, sill and impost bands, modillion eaves, balustrade. Mainly Venetian windows with glazing bar sashes and keystones. 3 storey main block, 3 windows, with set back 2 storey wings, single windows. The wings have single round-headed windows above. Balustraded square porch, now roofless, with corner pilasters and single Doric columns flanking the entrance. Single glazing bar light in each side. Fielded 6-panel door with sidelights and overlight. Rear wing, 2 storeys plus basement, has to east 3 round windows with glazing bars and keystones, the left one blocked, and to their right, set higher, a 3-light glazing bar casement. To right again, a close boarded door flanked by single round windows. Above, to left, a 3-light glazing bar casement and to right, 4 tall glazing bar casements. Below, to left, 2 fielded 6-panel doors and between them, three 3-light casements, 2 of them set in round-headed carriage arches. To right, a blocked door flanked by single 2-light mullioned windows and to right again, a fielded 6-panel door and a pair of segment-headed carriage doors. At the right end, an L-plan paved ramp to the first floor, with a stepped coped retaining wall to the slope and a spearhead railing to the shorter leg. West side has scattered fenestration including 3 round windows. INTERIOR has entrance hall with modillion cornice and open well cantilever stone stair with cast-iron fleur-de-lys balusters and mahogany handrail. Ground floor has fluted doorcases with cornices and first floor landing has a round-headed doorcase with hood on scroll brackets and cobweb fanlight. Right ground floor room has moulded cornice and a half-round domed recess. Inlaid limestone Classical fireplace. Other main rooms have enriched cornices, moulded doorcases and C19 marble fireplace. Service wing has segmental vaults throughout the basement and above. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Yorkshire: The West Riding: London: 1967-: 472).
