School house. c1882. Purpose built by Sir Arthur Blomfield. Brick with hipped Welsh slate roof. Brick with terracotta dressings and hipped plain tiled roof. Queen Anne style. Main range of 3 storeys and attic, 10-window range, 3-4-3, the outer sections advanced. Central entrance within projecting porch with fluted pilasters and wood balustrading over. Paired doors with traceried fanlight. Tripartite windows over door with entablature and scrolled pediments over. Ornamental glazing in the central window. 20-pane sash windows with entablatures and continuous sill bands. Similar windows in upper storey. Outer sections have tripartite windows on each floor, also with entablatures, and scrolled pediments over first floor. Ornamental glazing in French doors to right. Coved cornice to projecting roof with fluted axial stacks. Hipped roofed dormer windows within the roof. 4-storey rear range linked by wing to main block and employing similar detail. Part of a group of buildings commissioned by Shrewsbury School, this is also of significance as an early example of the Neo-Georgian style.
