II
Studio, set behind No.13 Rudall Crescent (not included).
c1880-1900. Rendered brick. Gabled slate roof, hipped over
canted end; cast-iron finial.
EXTERIOR: single storey. Canted front with stepped band
cornice, parapet and coping. Large moulded panel double door
with 2 x 6 pane overlight and keystone reaching into cornice.
Sash window to right. The studio extends back behind this
front, rising to full height of roof pitch with pine boarding;
glazed lights to hip over canted end and skylight to south
pitch of roof.
INTERIOR: not inspected but noted to have a sculpture gallery
at eaves level. Opposite entrance at far end of studio, a
staircase leads up to a gallery, having pierced splay
balusters of slightly Art Nouveau detail. Adjoining at angle
to left hand side is a bedroom with lantern light.
HISTORICAL NOTE: plaque commemorating the residence of artist
Mark Gertler from 1915-32. Some of his most important painting
was carried out here, in particular "Merry-go-Round" and the
still lives. His brief foray into sculpture with the
"Acrobats" of 1916 was executed in the studio and the gantry
may be associated with this, although the studio was later
occupied by the sculptor Roselli. Here he was visited by
Aldous Huxley, Dora Carrington, John and Paul Nash, and
Richard Carline as well as by DH Lawrence, Roger Fry, Lady
Ottoline Morrell and members of the Bloomsbury set with whom
he was associated.
