GV II

House, now offices. C16 with later extensions and a C18 front. Timber-framed; roughcast rendered; C20 plaintiled roof with a paired modillion eaves soffit. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and cellars. Five 12-pane sash windows to 1st storey, 6-pane sashes to 2nd storey; ground storey windows with plain lower sashes in ground glass. All windows have flush cased frames. A central doorcase with deep reveals has a shouldered architrave and a pediment. C20 fully glazed small-paned door. INTERIOR: the whole interior is timber framed, but the front range has extensive late Georgian overlay: boxed-in beams, 6-panel doors, panelled internal shutters. 2 rear chimney-stacks are flanked by alcoves. The top storey is an early C19 addition with a typical upper stair: stick balusters, rounded newels, curved handrail. Part of the timber frame can be seen on the 1st storey behind a chimney-stack. The south wall is a shared partition wall with the adjoining house where the studding is exposed and, on the ground storey, covered with extensive early C16 wall paintings (see entry for No.83 Whiting Street, qv). A small-paned sliding sash window in the original upper wall now overlooks a C19 stair, which is linked to a rear extension. A C16 wing extending from part of the rear has a 2-bay ground storey room with an ogee-moulded main beam and cross-beam.
