Justice's Cottage
II
House. Late C16 in-line hall house with inserted floor and chimneystack, refronted and refenestrated in early C20. Timberframed building refronted in pargeting with sunburst patterns and applied thin timber framing including diamond shapes and thatched roof with one C17 off central and one C19 end external brick chimneystack. One storey and attics; irregular fenestration. Front has one gabled dormer, one window and early C20 studded plank door with flat wooden hood. Rear elevation obscured by 1998 extension, which is not of special interest, but retains one dormer and one window to right of extension. Windows are C20 sealed double glazed units with stuck on lead to simulate leaded lights.
INTERIOR: Close-studded oak frame, the studs pegged braces trenched externally. Former parlour has horizontal joists housed into bridging joist with soffit tenon and diminished haunch and spine beam. Former open hall has large brick open fireplace with wooden bressumer carrying warding symbol and wooden pads beneath. Inserted floor over hall housed with axial bridging joist with housed soffit tenons and diminished haunch. Jowled storey posts. Original rafters with daub.
