Details

TL99SW STOW BEDON WATTON ROAD, Breckles Homestead 38/6/10002 II House. c1600 with later alterations. Pebbledashed and whitewashed timber frame with thatched hipped roof. Brick off-centre ridge stack. 2-unit plan. 2 storeys; 2-window range of 2-light casements to both storeys with small single light to centre ground floor. A further window in outshuts on either end, both with tile roofs and that to right with brick stack. Rear has further casements and doors and thatched outshut to rear of stack. INTERIOR: Frame largely obscured behind later linings. One jowled post visible with exposed tenon. Chamfered bridging beam to western room with ogee stops to stack end Chamfered transverse bridging beam to longer eastern room. Roofhas two part-closed queen post trusses forming the stack bay. Some lengths of purlin of triangular section surviving. One C18 truss with collar lap-jointed and nailed onto principal rafters. One truss with short principal rafters connected below the ridge with a collar. Crossed bracing, probably C18. A comparatively little altered house of the period.
