Details

1. 1291A GRASMERE Brimmer Head Farmhouse with adjoining farm building NY 30 NW 7/68 I 2. 1574 and 1870. Reputedly the oldest house in Grasmere.. White-washed stone rubble, slate roof, 2 storeys. New end added 1870, with a bay window. Front has centre door, 2 windows on ground floor and 3 above, all with wooden mullions, and 2 small gablets over upper windows. The later portion to the left has a gable, bay window and an upper window with labels. Farm building adjoins to right under same roof (shippons belay, loft above ). Traces of original external stairs. Interior has very low ceiling beams and oak panelling in present kitchen. Stairs mid-Cl7, with treads and panelling and turned balusters with Roman numbering. A blocked old window visible inside, and an oak chest dated 1637. Old ladder still extant inside the original C16 kitchen.
