GV II

Pair of semi-detached houses. Early to mid C19. Rendered, slate hipped roof. Although originally a symmetrical villa, the halves now differ in detail on the street front. 2 storeys, each 2 windows; No.38 has 4-pane sashes to stone sills, and to the right a 6-panel fielded door with radial fanlight, on 1 step. Right return has a 12-pane sash at first floor, and a deep 18-pane stair sash. No.40 has a tent verandah on cast-iron uprights and balustrade over 2 French doors with transom lights. Ground floor has a large canted bay with glazing bars to top light of sashes only; to the left, in a porch with panelled cheeks, 4-pane transom light, and reeded pilasters a 6-panel fielded door under plain fanlight. A deep stair light on the left return. Box eaves, large central rendered stack. INTERIOR: not inspected. Probably built at the same time as St Augustine's Church (qv), with Nos 34 & 36, and 42 & 44 (qqv) as a group.
