House. C16, considerably altered in 1960s when a 2-storey rear extension was added. Timber-framed and jettied, the timbers exposed on the upper storey and rendered below. Old plaintiled roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, cellar and attics. 2 window range: 12-pane sashes in flush cased frames to the 1st storey, one 12-pane sash and one tripartite sash with diminished side lights to the ground storey. These replace the older ground floor front which had small-paned early C19 shop windows. One gabled dormer with plain bargeboards has a C20 2-light standard casement window. Recessed C20 entrance door on the right. INTERIOR: cellar, with re-used stone blocks in the walls, is divided into 2 by an old partition wall with a low shallow-arched C15 stone doorway. Several niches in the walls. At the north end the supporting base of the chimney-stack which is shared with No.154 (qv). Frame in 2 bays with ceiling timbers and some studding exposed on the ground storey. 2 main ceiling beams with ogee mouldings are re-used and have housings for joists parallel to the front. The present joists are plain and unchamfered, set at right-angles to the front to form the jetty. In the south end wall a beam with roll-moulding has long mortices for arched braces which do not fit its present position. The chimney-stack is in Tudor brick with a shallow C19 brick arch. Some studding exposed on the 1st storey; a reset 3-light mullioned window on the rear wall. Attics fully plastered. (Colman S: External Photographs taken during restoration in 1960s).
