SY6685 CHURCH STREET, Upwey 873-1/5/551 (West side) William Gould monument to north of chancel, Church of St Laurence
GV II
Chest tomb and brass tablet. Dated 1681 on the brass. The limestone chest is set against the N wall of the chancel; immediately above it, on the wall, is a brass, formerly in the church, on a stone panel under a drip course. The brass, in the shape of a wide shield,is inscribed in Latin, and commemorates William Gould, who died in March, 1681, aged 49. A pick and shovel are included on the panel. The chest has a thick flat ledger slab with a deep cyma-mould edge, on 2 sunk arched panels to the N, a plain W end, and the E end also with a sunk arched panel carrying an inscription, no longer legible; the decorative treatment of the panels and the general design of the monument, could correspond with the late C17 brass. The cyma-mould base is partly sunk below ground level. The Gould family had a long connection with the parish, and a C19 monument is located in the church (qv).
