1317- 7/10119 Alkincoats Lodge.

II

Former lodge to small country house, now house. Circa 1850, with minor late C20 alterations. Coursed squared sandstone rubble, with ashlar dressings, quoins, coped gables with plain kneelers, and tall stone ridge stacks with moulded caps. Stone slated roof `L' plan house, built in the Tudor Revival style. East elevation; 2 storeys, 2 bays, set upon a shallow plinth. Central doorway within quoined surround, below shallow arched head and hood mould. Planked and studded door with undivided overlight. Gable to left with 2- light chamfer mullioned window with transom to ground floor, and stepped 3- light first floor window, with stepped hood mould. Ball finial to gable apex. Plainer single and 2-light windows to right side. Rear wing; gable to left, with single and 2-light mullioned windows with transoms. Off centre doorway with flat head and planked door. Tall stair window above. To right, stacked 2- light windows below gablet. Interior not inspected. History: the lodge was built to serve Alkincoats Hall, a c.1700 house refronted in about 1770, and demolished in 1958. The stepped mullioned window of the lodge imitates the attic windows of the main house. A well-designed and little altered example of the mid C19 estate lodge, fashioned to complement the house it was intended to serve.
