ROWDE HIGH STREET ST 9762 (south side) 11/251 The George and Dragon Inn 19.3.62 GV II

Inn, late C18 refronting of C16 or earlier timber-framed building. Roughcast on high painted brick and rubble stone basement with Bridgwater tile half-hipped roof, ridge stack and east end stack. Two storeys and attic over full-height basement. Small-paned triple casement windows, 3-window range to left with 4-panel centre door under timber hood on brackets. Eight stone steps up with iron railing. Blocked door in timber architrave to left of front. One-window range of similar windows to right. Cellar doors to right of steps. C20 east end addition. Rear has heavy square framing exposed, showing line of original roof. Interior: heavy chamfered and stopped spine beam over through passage. Room to west of passage has heavy spine beam with two bars to chamfer-stop and large ashlar moulded Tudor-arched fireplace with moulded stone shelf. Fielded panelled door to staircase. Possible foot of a cruck beam visible in front wall, by partition to passage. West end room has unusually moulded spine beam with two ovolo mouldings and carved rosette stops.
