Details
ST ANNES STREET 1. 1594 (South Side) The Blackmore Museum to SU 1429 NE 4/368A the rear of the Salisbury Museum II 2. Important example of a purpose built museum, virtually unaltered. Founded 1864 by W Blackmore to house a collection of artifacts, illustrating the "Stone age of different countries", the building was specially designed by John Harding and opened in September 1869. Built of brick with stone dressings in a gothic style, the museum is a rectangular hall with 2 large gabled mullioned transomed lancet light windows and a central gabled porch. Slats roof with saddlestones to gable ends, cresting tiles to ridge. The brickwork has a simple pattern grid of polychrome bricks. The interior has a fine hammer beam roof and battlemented original showcases, painted and gilt, along the walls. Floor of Minton encaustic tiles. Roof and wall decoration executed by Harland and Fisher, a London firm in Southampton Row who carried out major decorative schemes including work at the South Kensington Museum.
