Prince of Wales Apartments
(Formerly listed as Prince of Wales Hotel, PRINCE OF WALES TERRACE)
22.12.53
GV
II
Terrace block (formerly separate houses) on corner site with The Esplanade. Circa 1840-50 stucco fronts with rusticated ground floor and iron balconies to first floor. Originally three window facades divided by Corinthian pilasters rising to main cornice above third floor. Now with central Doric portico porch and left hand part of block altered, pilasters removed and slate mansard attic replacing original attic in parapet. At extreme west end later C19 four storey canted bay added. Sash windows majority with later glazing. The eastern end of block on corner of Esplanade is of three storeys though similar height with attic - two windows with five window return to Esplanade. The ground and first floor storeys are higher, deeper rustication to ground floor with round headed windows. Balcony to first floor where the windows have Corinthian pilaster frames and straight and segmental pediments. Prominent position completing earlier phase of Esplanade development.
Prince of Wales Apartments forms a group with Esplanade Hotel, Belmont Road, Nos 1 to 19 (consec) Esplanade, The Villa Esplanade Hotel and Nos 20 to 29 (consec) Esplanade.
