2/201 Sandford Ash Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Probably C16 core, rebuilt and extended in C17, refurbished in mid-late C19. Plastered cob on rubble footings; rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; asbestos roof. (formerly thatch). Originally a 3-room-and-through-passage house facing south-east with service room at left (south-west) end. C17 dairy wing at right angles to rear of service room and apparently C19 barn at right angles to rear of inner room. In C19 rear of passage blocked by stairs. End stacks to inner and service rooms and axial hall stack backing onto former passage. Symmetrical 5- window front. C19 6-panel main door left of centre has glazed upper panels and Tuscan doorcase with pilasters and entablature. Secondary C19 door right of centre is half-glazed with glazing bars and margin panes behind behind C20 glass roofed and sided porch. The 3 ground floor windows alternating with doors are 9-pane sashes and 5 fixed pane first floor windows have 6 panes each of similar size to ground floor. Roof is hipped each end and both rear wings have hipped ends. Right end (north-east) side of barn has 2 tall arch-headed windows with leaded glass at top. Interior is mainly mid-late C19 but service room and dairy have C17 chamfered beams with scroll stops and C17 roof to main block on oak A-frames with pegged lap- jointed collars. Layout suggests that many C17 and maybe earlier features are hidden.
