Hittisleigh village hall and adjoining house, formerly school and master's house.
Late C19. Brick with some granite dressings; brick stacks; red tile hanging and
red tile roof. School comprises large block facing south-east with forward
projecting wing near left (south-west) end and master's house as crosswing
projecting forward from right end. High single storey school buildings and 2
storey master's house with stack between the two. Arts and Crafts style. School
hall has 2 tall square-headed windows with timber mullion and transoms. Half-
hipped gable end of school wing includes arched window with brick pointed arch
interrupted by blocks of granite. 3-light mullioned window with outer lights given
pointed heads. Left gable end of school has C20 entrance lobby in front. Above 2
mullion-and-central-transom windows with heavy pointed glazing bars. Above a
central ogival light and at apex the roof extended on brackets to shelter bell.
School roof includes bands and lozenge shapes of fish-scale clay tiles and crested
ridge tiles. Front gable end of master's house has ground floor 3-light mullion-
and-transom window below slate-hung tympanum of arched head, 2 lancets to first
floor and slate hung top part of gable. At right corner a buttress breaks forward.
On right-hand return (north-east) house door is at left end. It has ornate strap
hinges and segmental-headed arch. To right stair turret projects square at ground
floor level, has granite broaches at first floor level to splayed corners of slate
hung first floor with hipped roof. 3-light window at right end in segmental-headed
arch. Disused stack serving first floor projects from wall on stone corbels to
left of stair turret. Old school house has C20 replacement tile roof. In both
buildings granite blocks are used in arched apertures and as springers for
segmental arches, and all windows are timber. A chamfered plinth and low band of
diagonally-set bricks run round the entire buildings.
