C12 with C13 and C14 alterations. Coursed rubble and roman brick, with some
uncoursed rubble on south aisle. Limestone dressings. Red plain tile roof.
Weatherboarded and shingled bell tower. Early C12 nave and chancel, apparently
one build and originally chancel vaulted. Roof is late C13 scissor braced, 7
cants, with moulded wall plates, 2 octagonal crown posts with moulded bases and
capitals. Of the original vault, the abutments and the springing for the transverse
arches, are all that remain in the nave. Early C12 apse, with plain half domed
vault. Three windows with round head of 2 arches of Roman brick, external jambs
and splays with free shaft. Internally shafts have carved or scalloped capitals
and moulded base. Semi-circular apse-arch of 2 plain orders and chamfered imposts.
North wall of nave and chancel has 3 windows, 2 modern and the third similar
to the apse. Early C12 north door with plain jambs, round arch and tympanum
filled with Roman bricks. C12 north door of 3 round orders, 2 moulded, one plain,
in Roman brick. Shafts to jambs with cushion capitals moulded abacus and base.
South wall has 4 arches. One modern. One late C12 two centred, of one chamfered
order. Late C13 arch, 2 centred with 3 chamfered order, in C13 bricks. Fourth
arch is 2 centred, on chamfered order possibly C14. Early C12 window heads above
arches. West wall has 2 windows. Lower one C14, 2 pointed lights in 2 centred
head, set in C12 opening. Upper window is C12. South aisle is late C13 or early
C14. Three windows 2 modern, west is C14 with 2 trefoiled ogee lights with a
quatrefoil 2 centred head. Modern south doorway, modern east archway and vestry.
Timber framed belfry and 2 tall posts with arch braces and transom. Mid C12
wall paintings an original structure, extensively restored late C19. Apse has
St Michael and St Gabriel and 10 Apostles, including Saint Peter and Paul. Centrally
a Majesty with rainbow supported by angels. Nave and Chancel have numerous figures,
with extensive decorative work and diaper motifs, South porth rebuilt C20. (RCHM 1).
