UPPER SLAUGHTER SP 1523 9/197 Lords of the Manor Hotel 25.11.83 - II
House, onetime Rectory, now hotel. Early C18 core, extended north and south 1855 by the Rev Francis Witts. Coursed rubble with freestone quoins and dressings, Cotswold stone roofs with coped verges, various ashlar chimneys with moulded capping. Irregular plan - basically early C18 L-plan extended to form courtyard to north, and by large block to south, as well as various minor extensions to west. 2½ storeys. Cross mullion windows, chamfered in rebates. The early C18 part has 3 bays to centre, small gabled dormers, square crenellated ground floor bays and central gabled doorway with Tudor-arched entrance; 2 bay gabled projection to right with a 3 light square oriel of 1855 to gable and 2 light attic windows; 1:2 bay extensions to north. To south the large and tall 1855 extension breaks forward with 2 irregular gables, the right hand one breaking forward again and with a large 8 light angled bay window of 2 storeys divided by heraldic shields: 1 range of windows to left with drips and let floor cill string, gable over for datestone. North side of C18 part has string over ground floor and stair lights to right blocked and ground floor. Hipped stair-turret to rear. Early-mid C18 dog-leg staircase with uncut string and wide ramped handrail; turned balusters; newel stair with octagonal newel at NE corners.
