GV II

Monument and dogs' drinking basin. 1806 by George Garrard for Samuel Whitbread II. Coade stone. The monument stands about 1 metre high, in the form of a carved reclining spaniel supported by an oval plinth. At the base of the plinth round headed arches open onto the drinking basin. The monument is dedicated to Jock, a favourite spaniel, and the inscription reads:

The good, the faythful and the just Are honour'd in the silent dust. Near his beloved Mistress' seat Departed JOCK such honours meet. Ye dogs who in succession share Your kindest Lady's tender care, Drink at this font, for see above A model of the truest love That ever warm'd your faithful Race. His living form you there may trace, Drink at this font and humbly vie with him in matchless constancy.

S W 1806 JOCK
