GV II

Former inn range, now shop with flats (Nos 79A and 79B) above. C17 altered C19 and C20. Timber-framed, stucco faced, old tiled roof with large gable end to street. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics. First floor has 2, and attic one flush-set sash window with glazing bars, with exposed boxes. Ground floor shop window mid C20, between yellow brick piers, large display windows, and twin entrance doors between timber pilasters, large flat board fascia. Rear outshoot Nos 79A and 79B, has 2 storeys, timber-framed with early C19 front of colourwashed brick, old tiled roof. East elevation has 2 triple light sashes, ground floor with glazing bars. Recessed central door under moulded flat hood supported on cut profiled brackets. At left is single bay single storey timber-framed structure with old tiled roof. INTERIOR: opened out on ground floor. Exposed beams in ceiling, one with ogee tongues stop to chamfer, indicate timber-framed origin. At rear of main building there is a dog-leg newel staircase of late C17 date, of close string construction, with moulded handrails and string, cut profiled splats, and newels with square moulded caps and square moulded pendants. Stair now cut off above first floor. Attic, now included with Nos 79A/79B, shows side purlin roof. Internally, ground floor of No.79 now runs into rear outshoot. First floor has exposed and cased beams, one with stepped stop to chamfer. Two 2-light windows facing west, with ovolo and cavetto moulded frame and mullions. Formerly The Star Inn, recorded in 1542, later incorporated with the adjoining Bell Inn at Nos 77, 77A and 77B (qv). This part of High Street colloquially known as `Starcross Row'.
