5/4 Staithe House. 5.6.53.
- II*
House, probably that of merchant or owner of adjoining staithe. Second quarter of C18. Flemish bond gault brick facade and west garden return, red brick east gable, black glazed pantiled roof. 2 storey 5 bay house and contemporary wing to east forming "L" plan. C19 service additions at rear. Facade has 3 bay pedimented centre, slightly recessed 2 flanking bays. Centre has 2 narrow sashes flanking door, first'floor one central sash and 2 flanking narrow sashes, wings have 2 ground and 2 first floor sashes, all flush wooden framed sashes with thick glazing bars under flat rubbed brick arches. Fine central wooden doorcase with 2 fluted Ionic half columns, bases and capitals, entablature with pulvinated frieze with foliage decoration, fully detailed projecting cornice and pediment, all details repeated in outer framing architrave, leaded flushing. Architrave to door moulded and panelled reveal, 6 panel moulded door, 4 panels glazed, rectangular fanlight with thick wooden glazing bars, central shell motif and spandrels with foliage relief. Facade united by ground floor brick plinth, first floor plat band with moulded base, eaves cornice with moulded base, modillion brackets, moulded parapet above, details all repeated in central pediment with rubbed brick central round arch l'oeil de boeuf window with glazing bars. Brick coped end gables with stone roundels on plinths at springing of gable, 2 end and one ridge stacks. East gable flush, west gable continued the relief strings of the facade in red brick, with 2 ground floor and 2 first floor and one segmental brick arched head, wooden framed sashes lighting a landing, all with glazing bars. Lower single bay 2 storey red brick wing at north east. Interior rooms and details of high quality. Central stone flagged entrance hall with contemporary stone fireplace with lugged surround. Open well staircase and first floor landing, fine carved strings with 2 turned balusters with urn bases per tread, handrail with swept neck at landing. 2 ground floor 6 panel raised and fielded doors with moulded architraves and panelling. Room to west has 2 fine carved doorcases, moulded architraves with lugged corners, broken pediments with central carved cartouches with monograms, 6 panel raised and fielded moulded doors.
