TQ 2881 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER UPPER WIMPOLE STREET, 44/16 (West side) W1 14.3.66 Nos 14 to 23(consec) G.V. II Terraced town houses, c1780-90 Portland Estate development, probably by John White. Stock brick, all, apart from No 22, with channelled or rusticated ground floors; slate roofs. 4 storeys and some dormered mansards, on basements. 3-window wide astylar fronts. Broad semicircular arched doorways to left, No 20 with Coade vermiculations and head keystone; Nos 14 and 18 have panelled doors, side lights, fluted or reeded jambs and fluted doorheads under fanlights; Nos 19 to 23 have double panelled doors with antae jambs, cornice-doorheads and patterned fanlights. Recessed sashes, under flat gauged arches to upper floors. Plat bands over ground floors; No 19 with 2nd floor sill band; Nos 16 to 18 and 22 with bracketed cornices over 2nd floors; parapets with copings. Nos 19, 21 and 23 excepted, there are early C19 geometric patterned and later C19 scrolled cast iron balconies or balconettes. Cast iron plumbed spike finialed area railings. Interiors not inspected.
