Details
SIBSON-CUM-STIBBINGTON WANSFORD TL 0698 ELTON ROAD (West Side) 10/136 Workshop, former soll to Wansford Paper Mill c.26 metres west of Stibbington House GV II Workshop, formerly the soll (rag sorting house) of the paper mill. Possibly early C19, with late C19 and C20 alterations. Coursed limestone rubble with freestone dressings. Low pitched hipped Collyweston stone slated roof. Two storeys, entrance facing south with glazed door to right hand and casement window to left hand, two large first floor windows with small panes and segmental brick arches. The soll may have survived the fire in the mill of 1805; it is illustrated in a bill head c.1830 with a double hipped roof, an explosion closed the mill in 1855 and the mill buildings were demolished in 1867. Newspaper was manufactured from bleached rags at the mill for the London Times and Stamford Mercury.
