Details

SIBSON-CUM-STIBBINGTON OLD GREAT NORTH ROAD, TL 09 NE Sibson (West Side) 1/109 Wansford Railway Tunnel c.500 metres west of Wansford Station II Railway tunnel. Completed June 1845 for L.N.W.R. Northampton - Peterborough line by Jones of Sheffield. Coursed rock faced limestone and freestone dressings to embankment walls, brick lined tunnel. Romanesque details to round arch of west portal with two roll-moulded and chamfered orders springing from attached columns with cushion capitals. Single track line with pedestrian side walk to south side. The tunnel was constructed in seventeen months by 1,000 navvies camped in a disused quarry in the parish of Elton.
