GV II
Maltings. Circa late 1840s. Yellow stock brick in Flemish bond; east and west ends weatherboarded timber frame. Pantile roof with gabled ends; kiln clad in plain tiles. Long rectangular range with 3 maltings floors. The south front with 12 bays with brick pilasters, small segmental brick arch windows, further weatherboarded bays on left and right ends, the right (east) end with projecting weatherboarded gabled hoist housing. Truncated cone-shape kilns, clad in plain tiles, on north and south pitches of roof at west (left) end; the cowl is missing. INTERIOR: under kiln a 6 foot high tunnel across the building. Kiln has wire floors intact, supported on iron bars secured by 21 round oval tie-plates inscribed `CHAS.WELLS WARE'. Charles Wells manufactured in Ware ironworks for malting until about 1847. (Ware 25" to 1 Mile. Surveyed by the Ordnance Survey Department: 1851-; The Industrial Archaeology of the British Isles: Branch Johnson W: The Industrial Archaeology of Hertfordshire: Newton Abbot: 1970-: 179).
