2. Main block is C17 refronted in brick in 1780, cornice, pediment, three storeys, three. three-light casement windows with segmental heads, and central door, top windows lunettes. Early timber frame west wing with re-used material probably from an earlier house of stone on the same site. Said to be birthplace of the Earl of Essex, favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. RCHM volume II, page 189.
Netherwood with the stable range barn and dovecote form a good group.
