Details

1. VIVARY PARK 5365 Fountain in Vivary Park ST 2224 SE 11/415 II GV 2. A richly detailed composition set in the middle of Vivary Park. Large circular basin with central fountain erected in memory of Queen Victoria and completed 1907. Colourwashed stone base with cast iron detail. The central fountain has clustered columns to the base with 4 attached shafts and brackets supporting lively putti riding on the backs of grotesque dolphins with foliated tails. Good curved reliefs of rural scenes on curved facets of the central shaft. Above is a large circular bowl with crested outer rim and bullrush detail on underside. Above this, the central shaft is surrounded by daffodils and 4 pelicans with outstretched wings, the spouts of the fountain in their breasts. Finally, on top is a smaller bowl with scallop shell detail supporting a robed female figure with torch raised in left hand. The outer rim of main basin on ground has rosettes and a cartouche with details of the dedication.

The listed buildings in Vivary Park and Mount Street form a group together with the School, Unitarian Chapel, the Lawn and Mary Street House in Mary Street. Wilton House in Hammets Walk, and Nos 1 to 14 (consec) Upper High Street.
