BURES ST MARY 1. 5377 TL 93 SW Little Mill House (about 400m West North 14/938 West of Smallbridge Hall) II
2. House. Probably C16 or early C17 remodelled in C19. Rendered timber frame on brick plinth. Steeply pitched hipped pantile roof. Brick axial stack to left (south east) of centre. Plan and development: 3 room plan with axial stack with back-to- back fireplaces between the left hand (south east) and centre rooms, creating a lobby entrance in front of the stack. It was probably in the C19 that the house was remodelled and when the centre room was subdivided with inserted partitions which formed a cross-passage between the centre and right hand rooms and a small scullery or pantry at the back. The single storey outshut behind the left hand room was probably added later in the C13 or early C20. Exterior: 1 storey and attic. Asymmetrical north east front, the windows and doorway disposed to the left. 2 C19 16-pane sashes with horns, (probably restored in C20) and circa early C20 plank door to left of centre. Similar sash on left hand (south east) end. The right hand north west end has 2 small C19 iron-frame casements with glazing bars. At the rear 2 raking dormers with C13 16-pane sashes, plank door and C20 casement to left and single storey weather-boarded outshut to right. Interior: only partly investigated. Stop-chamfered axial beams in left and centre rooms. Late C19 chimneypiece and grate in left hand room. The framing is said to be concealed and the roof structure is probably of interest.
