Details
EWELL TQ2165 Salisbury Road 8/152 (West Side) Worcester Park No 95 II House 1937. By Connall, Ward and Lucas. Mass reinforced concrete, painted. Modern Movement style. 2 storeys, 2½ bays, the entrance half-bay set back on right. Continuous horizontal panels of windows, transomed and with casements, and at the front under hood. Entrance bay has doorway with modern door on left under canopy which projects forward the full depth of the house with a curved front corner; the 1st floor windows of this bay are full-height. Parapet concealing roof. Rear: on left, in rear of entrance bay, is doorway, with balcony above, the intention being that stairs could be added leading up to it and a door inserted in the window. Shorter windows in the central bay give stepped effect; doorway to right bay has modern door.
The building was designed as a 4-bedroom family house which could readily be converted into two 2-bedroom flats (one on each floor) as family size reduced.
Connall, Ward and Lucas was one of the foremost British architectural firms of the period (along with Lubetkin and Tecton) and was one of the few firms in Britain to actually use mass reinforced concrete rather than materials made to look like it.
