4/37 Inner North Dock Walls
II
Walls of excavated inner north dock. c.1825-30 by William Chapman with contemporary revisions by Rennie and Telford. Large dressed blocks of Penshaw sandstone with tooled and margined faces. Trapezoidal plan enclosing an area of about one hectare. Slightly battered pier walls to north, east and west are c.8 metres high and retain some C19 cast-iron standards for chain railings. Retaining wall to south c.15 metres high with flight of steps at south-west corner. Narrow dock entrance to south-east with 2 hydraulically-operated gates of wood and 2 flanking mooring posts of cast-iron. 2 mooring posts of wood in centre of dock basin. Attached dock wall to south-west of dock entrance not of special interest.
