House, C13, C14, C16 and later. Timber framed and plastered with gabled red plain
tile roof. 2 storeys. H plan with jettied and gabled cross-wings to north and
south ends. 1:2:1, window range of various casement windows with 2 canted C19 bays
on ground floor of front elevation. Later wing at rear of north end. Off centre
chimney stack on flank of south cross-wing. 2 bay mid C14 open hall with heavy
framing, cambered tie beam and remnants of arch bracing, and attached shafts on
wall posts with moulded capitals.
Heavily sooted octagonal crown post roof with moulded base and capital, and 4 braces.
2 original doorways, one consisting of 2 heavy arched "berms" and the other with a
wide but conventional arched head. Inserted late C16 first floor in hall. Early
C16 inserted chimney stack, backing on to former cross passage, originally designed
to serve the full height open hall. It has a moulded mantel beam, with broad
segmental brick arch above, enclosing blind tracery, cusped, cinquefoiled recesses
with both painted and terracotta decoration, including the DeVere star, referring
to the family who owned the property in the C16. Above the arch is a simple brick
crenellated capping.
The rear of the stack, facing the cross passage, has simple decoration of blind
cusped recesses and painted imitation diapering. The south wing is late C13 with
heavy joists resting on the central bridging joist. Pair of service doors with
2 centred heads, and evidence of the original stair opening and door ajoining the
rear of the frame. Heavy, very broad wall bracing to front wall, and similar
slightly curved counter bracing to south wall and service wall partition. Top
plates have long splayed scarfs with under-squinted abutments and numerous face
pegs. Crown post roof with simple, slightly curved, thick longitudinal braces.
North wing is partly of very close C16 studding and has dimple crown post roof.
