Details

Formerly newsroom and library now pair of cottages: 1854 for 5th Lord Vernon, converted and dormers added 1919. Flemish bond orange-pink brick, buff sandstone dressings, with shaped Welsh slate roof and 2 brick chimneys. 1½ storey, symmetrical 6-bay front. Stone plinth and rusticated quoins. 1 storey end bays set back under hipped roofs have casement with glazing bars under wedged, flat gauged and rubbed brick heads. Adjacent bays have 2-light casements under similar heads below and in gabled, half dormers above. Pair of doors under gauged and rubbed heads in centre under projecting gabled porch. All gables and eaves have shaped and pierced woodwork with trefoil bosses and pointed finials.
This building was illustrated in the Illustrated London News of June 1854 as a model for other colliery owners.
