STANHOPE STANHOPE NY 93 NE 20/269 Stanhope Hall 31/1/67 GV II* House, now 3 dwellings. C16/C17, possibly incorporating earlier fabric, with alterations. Varied stone rubble with some millstone grit ashlar and quoins; ashlar dressings. Stone-flagged roof with some Welsh slate. H-plan. East elevation 3 storeys, 7 bays, the left 2 wider; one-storey, one-bay right extension. 2-storey projections flank 3 central symmetrical bays which have diagonally-boarded double door on iron brackets in chamfered Tudor-arched surround; flanking cross windows, shorter first-floor cross windows and second- floor 2-light windows, all single-chamfered with flat-fronted diamond mullions; most of first 2 floors ashlar.

Left wing has sashes with slender glazing bars under stone and wood lintels; right wing has flat stone lintels to renewed wood-mullioned cross window; door at right under 4-pane overlight and flat stone lintel. Massive diagonal buttress with many offsets on left corner of left wing; right wing has clasping lower courses to lower left corner. Roof is hipped over main building and catslide over wings; hips of Welsh slate. Wide stone chimney stacks irregularly placed. Left return has Tudor-arched door and three 2-light stone-mullioned windows; 5 stone corbels at centre of first floor formerly supported oriel, replaced by 5-light mullioned-and-transomed window with outer lights blocked. 2-light stone-mullioned attic window; side bays have early C18-C19 sashes.

Interior: south wing, all one residence, has wide square-headed chamfered fire lintel in east ground-floor room; first-floor west room has wide segmental- arched stone fireplace with voussoirs, and small cupboard recess in wall at left; beehive bread oven in chimney at right; chute to ground floor in fireplace at left. Second-floor has 3 smaller flat-Tudor-arched chimney pieces. Stud- and-plaster screen, with top diabolo balustrade, at west end of first-floor room. Some doors early, some with 6 fielded panels brought from elsewhere. Early C18 stair in narrow open well has closed string and ramped handrail on tapered column-and-vase balusters; first-floor landing has splat balusters. North wing has C17 closed-string dog-leg stair, through 3 floors, with fat turned balusters, moulded high-topped handrail and square newels with acorn finials, in rear projection. Ground floor has C17 panelled screen; similar panelling in passage with boarded dado along opposite side.
