Details
KINVER C.P. WHITTINGTON SO 88 SE 11/108 Whittington Inn 16.6.53 II* House now inn. Late C16 rebuilding of a medieval house with later alterations. Timber framing of small square panels with straight braces and tension braces, painted brick infill and some brick repairwork; plain tile roof; brick ridge stack with lozenge section shafts, and brick integral end stack. 2 parallel ranges of 4 framed bays (including an entrance passage) aligned east-west facing south; early C19 additions included a north range on the same alignment and a wing at the north-east corner aligned north-south. 2 storeys and attic, 4 windows, C20 latticed case- ments, gables to right and to left of centre, and between the 2 gables a 2- storey gabled porch with a wide segmental entrance arch. Twin timber framed gables to both ends. Interior: C16 nail studded front door constructed of vertical boards on one side and horizontal boards on the other, large strap hinges and ovolo-moulded surround. In the entrance passage a pointed doorway, C14/C15, a remnant of the medieval house and possibly in situ at the north end of the former cross passage. In the front room to the west is an open fireplace, backing on to the entrance passage, with timber bresummer; C17 wall panelling to the north wall; a spine beam covered in C17 decorative plasterwork and a C17 straight staircase with closed string and turned balusters, at the top of the staircase is an early C18 balustrade.
