House. Probably mid/late C17 in origin, remodelled and partially rebuilt circa 1700. Framed construction, underbuilt or clad in brick on the ground floor, the first floor tile-hung; peg-tile roof; brick stacks.
Plan: The house faces approximately west. The early plan appears to have been a 2-cell main range with a central entrance into the larger room to the left (north) which is heated from an end stack. Smaller room to the right (south). A rear centre stair projection probably also dates from this phase as does the rear left outshut. The brickwork suggests that there was also a rear right outshut, subsequently (probably C19) enlarged into a 2-storey kitchen wing at right angles to the main range. An unheated one-room plan block with a rear outshut at the left (north) of the main range may have been an C18 outbuilding which has been absorbed into the house.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Approximately symmetrical 2-window front with a moulded fascia at first floor level and deep sprocketted eaves. Almost central C19 panelled front door with an C18 flat porch hood on shaped brackets. This has been converted into a shallow porch by the addition of plain timber sides. 2 first and 2 ground floor C19 or C20 2-light casements, 6 panes per light. Straight joints in the brickwork of the front elevation suggest that the windows have been altered on the ground floor. The roof of the main block is gabled, the left end stack has staggered shafts with a corbelled brick cornice. The block adjoining at the left has a lower roofline, hipped at the left end. The rear right (south east) wing is gable-ended with a corner stack. The rear centre projection preserves one wall post which descends to the footings.
Interior: The left hand heated room has a scroll-stopped crossbeam and exposed joists of slender scantling. Large fireplace with achamfered lintel and 2 keeping places. The right hand room has a reeded C19 timber chimney- piece.
Roof: Not inspected but said to have pegged joints.
The house is still associated with a charity, documented in the 1690s (information from the owner).
