II
Walls, steps and 4 statues on pedestals. Early C20, probably contemporary
with the remodelling of Nizels House. Brick and stone walls, stone steps,
stone statues.
Plan: The formal, square Buddha garden is immediately in front of (east of)
the main block of Nizels House on a terrace above more open garden land. The
lower level of the garden is reached by a flight of steps leading down from
the Buddha garden to the south. The garden is planted with clipped yews and
rose bushes, a statue which formerly stood in the centre was stolen. The
retaining walls of the terrace are stone rubble with low brick walls above to
the garden, curving down in the centre of the east, north and south sides. 4
stone pedestals stand within the garden at the centre of each side with small
statues of the Buddha facing the centre of the garden.
The Buddha garden is important to the setting of Nizels House and part of an
Edwardian garden combining formal and informal areas.
