II GV

Public House: late C18 with additions and alterations dated 1869. Stuccoed, with Welsh slate roof and 3 sandstone chimneys. L-shaped with 3-storey gabled front to right and 2-bay, 2-storey addition to left. Gabled bay has raised quoins and flat rusticated heads to the windows, with a carved palmette on the keystone, above tripartite sashes without glazing bars. Addition to left has larger tripartite sashes under hood mould. Doorcase has a heavy cornice, on square pilasters with a raised panel, above a plain rectangular fanlight and a heavily moulded, 6-panelled door. Interior: Only 1869 ceiling cornices have survived modernisation.

Bears were kept here until mid C19 for public bear-baiting in Fountain Square. Listed for-group value only.
