Details
RAILWAY STREET 1. 5113 (West Side) SE 1416 NW 1/43 11.2.77. Nos 2 to 6 (even) II* GV 2. Mid C19. Ashlar. Hipped slate roof. 4 storeys. Deeply moulded modillion eaves cornice. The design falls into 2 slightly dissimilar parts, separated by a central bay which is as follows. Segment-headed carriage entrance on ground floor. 1st and 2nd floors have tripartite windows in moulded frames. Central light on both floors breaks forward slightly. On 1st floor, it has a balustrade with vase-shaped balusters, Tuscan pilasters, quintuple keystones (central one gadrooned) and triangular pediment. Above pediment 2 triglyph-like consoles link it to the cill of the 2nd floor window. Central light on 2nd floor has an individual frame with a keystone and broken segmental pediment. 3rd floor window has plain pilasters and brackets to cornice. The southerly part has raised quoins. 5 ranges of sashes, with moulded surrounds, pulvinated friezes and cornices on 1st floor. 2nd floor windows linked to them by fluted consoles; moulded surrounds and triangular pediments on consoles. 3rd floor windows have shouldered moulded surrounds. The northerly part has continuous moulded sill bands to 2nd and 3rd floor. Continuous marbled impost band to ground floor windows, below which ground floor is horizontally rusticated. Moulded plinth. Vermiculated and rusticated quoins. 5 ranges of sashes. Ground floor windows round-arched with vermiculated keystones. Centrally placed door in concave niche. 1st floor windows have moulded surrounds gadrooned keystones, frames with pulvinated friezes and triangular pediments, and balustrades on consoles with vase-shaped balusters. Above pediments 2 triglyph-like consoles link them to cills of 2nd floor windows these have moulded surrounds and cornices. 3rd floor windows are separated by sunk and moulded panels, and have plain pilasters and brackets to cornices. Curved end bay to St George's Square. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors are the same as in the central bay. Ground floor has panelled double doors with segment-headed fanlight, rusticated jambs with festooned roundels at top, moulded impost and transom, festooned and gadrooned keystone and moulded cornice. Area with cast iron railings.
