STANHOPE EASTGATE NY 9538 37/177 Cragside Cottages GV II

House and outbuilding, now 3 separate houses. C17 with alterations and additions. Sandstone rubble with irregular plinth and ashlar dressings; some quoins; Welsh slate roofs. L-plan. 2 storeys, 5 bays and left gabled projection of 2 storeys, 2 bays; outbuilding one storey, 4 bays. Left projecting wing, raised at left, has C20 porch at left; 2-light windows at right under flat stone lintels, and 2-light stone-mullioned window in gable peak under interrupted label mould. Main part of house at right has half- glazed doors in second and third bays, the left under flat stone lintel and the right surrounded by vegetation. Irregular fenestration, with 2- and 3- light windows, some with stone mullions, all with renewed glazing, and some blocked windows; fragments of label moulds. 3 ridge chimneys. Outbuilding has 3 late C19 sashes-with flat stone lintels and slightly-projecting stone sills, and one C20 3-light casement; low-pitched roof with tall ridge chimney.

Interior: large ground-floor room has high-quality ceiling, with stout beams and chamfered joists; also C17 panelling. Other ground-floor room has heavy chamfered beam.

C20 left extension not of interest.
