GV II
House, formerly farmhouse. Late C15/C16 origins, C17 alterations, C20 alterations. Whitewashed stone with some cob above. C20 concrete tile roof hipped at left end, gabled at right end, formerly thatched. Large stone ridge chimney with weatherings for thatch, brick chimney at right gable end. Evidence of late C15/early C16 open hall house. Stack inserted in C17, probably with passage between higher and lower ends, stair may have been inserted in passage. Rooms at higher end heated, room at lower end said to have been used as outbuilding formerly. Roof raised and house widened to rear, C20 leanto at rear. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with off-centre C20 timber gabled porch. Ground floor window left 3-light C20 barred casement. Ground floor window to right of porch 2-light C19 casement, 6 panes per light. Ground floor window right 16 pane C19 sash under segmental head. Blocked doorway on front to left of sash. 3 first floor 2-light C20 casements, 6 panes per light. Interior Ground floor room right has massive fireplace with unhewn fireplace beam and cloam oven, 2 large axial ceiling beams and smaller cross beams. Stud and plaster partition wall. Ground floor room to right of porch has massive fireplace with unmoulded fireplace beam, 2 large chamfered cross beams with step stops, smaller axial beams. First floor room right has canted ceiling with remains of C17 moulded plaster cornice. 2 massive raised crucks in upstairs rooms with mortices for collars, collars missing. Roofspace not thoroughly accessible at time of survey 1984, but smoke-blackened trusses visible both to left and right of stack, some replacement of rafters. Smoke-blackened roof below C20 roof. The house is said to have been the property of William de Gooseham, instituted as Vicar of Morwenstow in 1312.
