2. Established in 1858 as Brockham Home and Industrial School for orphan girls by Mrs Way of Wonham Manor, Betchworth; infants' home added at southern end in 1871. Plaque commemorating 1859 inauguration at northern end; date of 1871 inscribed at southern end. Red brick below; tile hung above; brick modillion course between 1st and 2nd storeys. Red tiled roof. 2 storeys. Paired and single window bays with gables extending to different heights and alternately in projection and recession. 8 window bays with 8 gables facing west; 2 window bays and gables at south and canted towards north-west. 2a 1: 2b: 2az: lc: ld: 2e (numbers refer to numbers of windows). la1 : 2 oriel dormer windows on brackets, gables with bargeboards over. In b: 2 window bays project through both storeys with 2 conjoined gables over. Tile-hanging in both storeys. Bell-cote above on ridge of roof. Sash windows with glazing bars. Central doorway with rectangular fanlight with pointed canopy over. Door with 6 fielded panels. a z comprises 2 oriel dormer windows with gables and bargeboards over. c comprises projecting bay in both storeys; gable over. 1 double sash window above with glazing bars; casement window below with diamond shaped panes. d comprises a bay in recession, one oriel dormer with gable over. e comprises 2 projecting bays with gables over. 2 3 light windows above with diamond and rectangular shaped tracery 1 similar window below in slightly segmental arch. Brick below and tile-hung above. These last 2 bays canted towards the north-west.
