HAWSTEAD
PLACE FARM
Walling and 2 gateways 20 metres north-west of Place Farmhouse
(Formerly only gatepiers listed with Hawstead Place under General)
G.V.
II
Walling, C16; probably for Sir William Drury. 70 metres long, with returns
of 40 metres towards the east at either end. Red brick, in English bond, about
3 metres high, with massive moulded clay copings. Constructed to enclose the
garden of Hawstead Place, which was demolished early C19, but whose moated site
remains to the east. A gateway inserted c.1675, probably for Sir Thomas
Cullum; pair of gatepiers of red brick in a mixture of Flemish and English
bond; about 4 metres high, with niches at low level having semi-circular heads
of gauged brick. The piers surmounted by a heavy cornice, and a cupola with
ball finial, all of carved limestone. A similar but plainer pair of gatepiers
in a short southward arm of the C16 wall, which is attached at its south end to
Place Farmhouse.
