8/155 Sherring Monument 3 metres south of Chancel of Church of St Michael

GV II*

Table-Tomb. Early C18. Stone, with ornamental end blocks, 2 raised and round-headed panels to each side, and hipped top block with heavily moulded cornice. End-blocks are richly carved with linked garlands, with skull-and- cross bones at one end and cherub at other. Inscriptions: left panel, "Here lieth the body of Henry Sherring Who Died Jan 1 17(33) Aetat 30. Also Katherine the Daughter of Henry and Ioan Sherring. Who Died June 3rd. 17(57)." Verse epitaph on right panel: "Here I repose, And find Relief, Waiting in Hope out of this Dust, To Rise and Live, Among the Just". An ornately sculptured, and-well-lettered example of this type of monument.
