Details
1. THE GOSS 5106 Brierley Hill 4/1 No 42 (Lock-Keeper's House II
2. Lock-Keeper's house. 1779 with C19 alterations and addition. Probably based on a standard design by Thomas Dadford, Senior,Surveyor and Engineer to the Dudley Canal Company, to house the keeper of the Delph Locks. Later render on brick. Later tiles to roof: a hip over the canted N.W. end bay which faces the canal, and gables at the S.E. end. Brick ridge stack and gable end stacks. Brick dentil eaves cornice. 2 storeys withCl9 single storey gabled extension at S.E, end. The canted bay at N.W. end has a C19 cross mullion/transom casement with bars on the front. A metal plate above inscribed with the Birmingham Canal Navigation reference number:151. On first floor a horned sash. Probably windows to the canted sides, but now blocked and rendered. Entry on S.W. side in C1930 porch. Windows similar to N.W. bay on N.E. and S.W. sides of house.Interior not inspected. The locks, which were originally close to the house, were replaced in 1858 by locks at 68 metres to N.W. Important as one of the few surviving canal houses of this type.
