House. 1891-2. By HCM Hirst. Snecked Pennant rubble, limestone and brick dressings, stone gable and ridge stacks and slate hipped roof. Double-depth plan. Free Gothic style. 3 storeys, basement and attic; 3-window range. Asymmetrical front with a projecting right-hand bay, floors marked by drips and courses of brick, cornice with Tudor flowers and a crenellated parapet. Flight of steps to central doorway with 4-centre arched boarded door, mullion overlight and tall margin lights, below a short canopy gabled over the door. Left-hand canted ground-floor oriel has cross windows and a steep slated roof; above are diaper brick patterns to the first and second floors. Right-hand bay has 3-light mullion and transom windows, in a canted bay with a parapet on the ground floor, and above, without transoms, on the second. To the right is a 4-centre carriage arch beneath a deep cornice and small oriel with 4-light mullion window and parapet. The left return has diaper brick patterns and a chimney stack with a blind pointed panel. To the rear is a half-timbered octagonal turret, and matching C20 extension on crenellated single-storey wing. INTERIOR: a central hall with dogleg stair and stick and turned balusters, and cornices with Tudor flowers. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: a flight of steps up to the doorway has cast-iron balusters. A fine example of domestic architecture in the Free Gothic style.
